we want to see Linux-support for
the
in kernel 2.6.20, the via8251 seems to be fully supported. I've prooved using a grml live-cd.
sata and pata shoul'd worke nice.
download here my kernel ( 2.6.16, .deb file, 11.5 MB ) kernel-image-2.6.16_viasata30dec06_i386.deb
as I've read on http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=71754&enterthread=y chipset might be supported in the 2.6.18 kernel series.
also, there are some patches arround - e.g. for 2.6.16 look here
I got it finaly work on my computer using a Debian/sarge with a 2.6.16 kernel from backports.org and the patches for the link aboth. ( and yes, compiling 2.6 kernels is a time-consuming hobby :) my tips: patch it, and compile in (not module) ahci, sata_via, support vor IDE-drives and you r faforite FS ( in my case EXT3). you can savely deactivate all the un-neccessary stuff ( isdn, sound, some FS, ... you dont need - you will recognize a smaller kernel compiled in shorter time :)
I've built on top of this board a 1Tb storage. ( soft-raid 5, lvm2, ...) see some details here: http://kasieben.livejournal.com/tag/1tb
I want also thank the people who wrote me - from all over the world ( internet realy makes world small): to name some: Brazil, the Netherlands, India, Argentinia... and some others...
if you own a motherboard with a via vt8251 chipset, and can't use it with Linux *, you are right here.
VIA has released a driver, but it's limited to some suse, mandrake & redhat distributions. It won't patch against a current one...
*) SATA doesn't work at all, and PATA mode only in slow-non-DMA mode with a "vanilla" kernel.
currently, I've no idea how to solve this problem. ( ok, it will fix itself during time, but I do not want to wait for kernel 3.0.0 ;-)
comment's, ideas, howto's , ... you can send to via8251@la-evento.com
Also, if you have the same problem - wouldn't it sound nice if there is a "2342 people are waiting for a solution..." ;-)
